Komatsu, Hitachi, CAT, JCB: Are Their Parts Interchangeable?

Komatsu, Hitachi, CAT, JCB: Are Their Parts Interchangeable?

TL;DR

How much do parts actually cross between Komatsu, Hitachi, CAT, and JCB machines — and where brand-specific engineering makes a real difference.

Some categories cross more than others

Generic, commodity-style parts — certain filters, bulk hydraulic hose and fittings, and seals or bearings built to industry-standard sizing — are far more likely to have genuine cross-brand equivalents than precision, brand-engineered assemblies.

Where brand engineering actually diverges

Hydraulic pump and valve architecture, electronic control systems and sensors, and undercarriage track gauge and pitch are all specific to a brand's own chassis and hydraulic design. These rarely cross cleanly even between different model lines from the same manufacturer, let alone between competing brands.

Shared history is real, but limited

A few brands share component suppliers or have joint-venture history, which is part of why some parts cross more easily than the badge on the machine might suggest. But this has to be verified part by part and spec by spec — it's not something that can be assumed from a brand pairing alone.

How to actually verify cross-brand fit

Match against the part's own specification — port size, spline count, physical dimensions, OEM part number — rather than the machine class or general appearance. Treat any "compatible with Komatsu and similar excavators" claim with the same caution you'd apply to any other cross-reference: verify the number, not the description.

The safe default

When in doubt, buy against the part's own spec, not the badge on the machine it came off of.
